Comparto aquí el último “Speech” que di en Toastmasters Madrid. Y por supuesto… están invitados a unirse a nuestro grupo en inglés o al grupo en español.
Imagine that you are going back home in the noon.
You have obtained great results in your yob after weeks or months of working very hard.
You feel proud of yourself.
Your body is filled with the pleasure of a great success as a result of your efforts.
You walk with pride, you smile with pride
You are walking pleasantly and the sun is streaming through the tree branches. But you don’t see it, you are immersed in your thoughts.
The birds are tweeting around you. But you don’t listen to them… You are remembering the congratulations you have received today.
The gardens of your neighbourhood are full of flowers, and there is a very sweet parfum that comes from the jasmines. But you don’t even notice it.

You feel like a knight dressed in a brilliant armor who is well known for saving
towns from the power of very bad dragons.
And you arrive at home and say: let’s celebrate my succcess
And everybody says: OK, let’s do it, but first take out your armour.
What?, you say. Why should I take it out, if it’s really beautiful?
Because we want to be with you!, with your real you, says your family. Not with your “labels”, not with the manager of… the owner of… the consultant
of… the engineer of…
You don’t even understand what they are saying, but you love
them so much that you accept.
But there is a problem… you find that you are stuck in the armour!
This happens to many people. They are so identified with their role, that they don’t know who they are.
Some years ago, a Coaching Teacher (Andrés Ubierna) told me a story that had a great impact on me.
He told me that an actor was very famous because of the role he played in a TV series.
When the TV programme finished, he was so identified with the role, that he felt really depressed and finally he committed suicide.
This story affected me so much, that since then I tried to be very conscious in order not to identify with a role.
One of the tools I used has been language. For example, instead of saying “I’m a manager”, I began saying “I work as a manager”. Instead of saying “I’m an accountant”, I began saying “I graduated as a Public accountant”
In this last months, lot of people has been dismissed of their jobs. Or have reduced their companies’ operations. Or had to sell their cars or were not able to pay their mortgages any more.
And besides the economic problem, they have another one, that is related to identity.
As a Coach, one of my questions for them is: Who are YOU besides those roles? Who are you besides being a lawyer, a teacher… the father of… the wife of…the employee of… the director of…the owner of…
Many people does not even make themselves this question.
Where is the answer to this question?
It’s not in TV, not in internet, may not even in our thoughts.
Let’s try to find answers in our silence.
Let the air go… Let’s allow ourselves to have different feelings: sadness, joy, fear, rage, sadness. Receive them as guests in your house… Without censoring them, without attaching to them. A meanness, some momentary awareness. Meet them all at the door of YOUR house, invite them in and see what they have to teach you…
Let the air go….
And see what happens…
WHO I AM?
An easy question with such a complex answer. Just making the question leads us to new possibilities.
Let’s do it and see where this question takes us.
WHO I AM?
